- SIR! - What? - We have a problem! - What is it?? - I'm not sure if you want to
know... At least its Bokeh Wednesday for the rest of us. :)
Playing around with complex numbers A conformal transformation is a kind of function
defined over all complex numbers that has the basic property of being differentiable, i.e.
continuous and smoothly varying. Such a function defines a transformation on the plane that
has the property of conserving the angles. This implies that on a very small scale shape is
preserved in such a transformation. Almost all these images are done with a Gimp plug-in
called Mathmap. Then it is just a matter of finding an interesting transformation. For a
basic overview and some examples, there is the Mathworld page. For a whole lot of
explorations, visit John Matthews page.

What you see here is the result of a long and complicated search, but with an enormous
amount of help from Daniel M. German I've able to construct the conformal projection of the
cube. If your first reaction is to mutter: "The what of the cube?" or just
"So?", and if you are interested, please follow these explanations... You
may have seen before panoramas projected in a cube: in flickr for example, there is a
"foldables" group and I have some myself (including other polyhedra).
These panoramas have all in common the use of the gnomonic or perspective projection: in
this type of projection straight lines stay straight. This is great for architectural
photos, but as you can see for the model on the right, you get broken lines in the sides of
the cube (the columns of the cathedral seem to be broken). It is possible in theory to
devise a conformal projection that would show the sphere as a cube. However it is very
difficult to find information on such a projection. The usual inter

You haven't lived in Zürich if you haven't taken a shot of the psychedelic escalators

If you visit Banff, then you should take a little time and drive up the road towards L.
Minnewanka. Just before you get to the lake, there is a trail head for hiking up Cascade
Mountain. After about a 1/2 hour uphill hike, you'll find an old abandoned coal mine. You
can walk out on the left over tailings as they are devoid of vegetation. You'll be rewarded
with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Minnewanka is nestled just beneath Mount
Inglismaldie which is part of the Fairholme Range in the Canadian Rockies.
